Overview

Throughout this unit of work, "Safety in Cyber Space" students will gain the skills and knowledge of how to be successful, informed and safe users of technology and inparticular the internet and social media sites.  Children are becoming more exposed to digital technologies both in the classroom and at home and it is important they understand and familiarise themselves with how these technologies and operate.

This resource has been deveolped in conjunction with the Technologies Curriculum and the following Key Idea Learning Areas:

Systems Thinking - Understanding components of a computer (hard drive, mouse, keyboard.  Understanding "what is the internet"?

Design Thinking - Interaction with peers through forums and other online outlets.

Safety - Safe use of technologies and recognising potential hazards/threats.

With computers and social media becoming more and more accepted as a way of life in our modern world, it is important to teach young children about computers - how they work, cyber footprints and how to be safe and aware of potential risk surrounding everyday technology.  This resource will be a unit plan developed in conjunction with the Design & Technologies strand of the Australian Curriculum.  The Unit is designed to inform students how to be cyber safe, how to recognise potential online threats, who to talk to regarding cyber safety issues, and what personal information can and cannot be uploaded .  This resource will require students to complete parts of lessons online for authenticity purposes, this will also provide opportunities for students to recognise and familiarise themselves with the hardware and software components of a computer (mouse, keyboard, screen, programs, data etc) as per the complementary content description.  Children enjoy learning through games and interactive activities; therefore students will engage in a number of cyber-safe games and learning activities which are endorsed by government agencies.  These activities will help ensure the learning experiences are credible and relevant on the way to achieving the intended learning outcomes of the Australian Curriculum.
