Assessment Task and Rubric Resource (Year 5)

Knowledge and Understanding

  • Examine how people in design and technologies occupations address competing considerations, including sustainability in the design of products, services, and environments for current and future use (ACTDEK019)

Processes and Production Skills (Complementary)

  • Critique needs or opportunities for designing, and investigate materials, components, tools, equipment and processes to achieve intended designed solutions (ACTDEP024)

Overview

Before completing the assessment task, students will have undertaken a unit of work on Sustainable Living & Housing.  Through this unit they will develop and understanding of the importance of sustainable housing and minimising human environmental 'footprints' for future generations.  Student will investigate materals and features used for building homes and in other contexts to determine their sutability and sustanability properties and also the importance of recycling objects to keep them out of landfill.  For assessment, students will be required to follow a design brief and design their own sustainable home.

This resource has been deveolped in conjunction with the Technologies Curriculum and the following Key Idea Learning Areas:

Creating preferred futures - Solution for future sustainability

Project management - Planning for development of a resource (House)

Thinking in Technologies - Systems, Design & Computational thinking

ICT in the Australian Curriculum - Oportunities to learn using ICT

The resource for the design and technologies strand of the curriculum will be a work / assessment booklet and diorama based on sustainable homes and living.   Students will investigate sustainability, home planning and building homes in a manner which can help to sustain the environmen.  They will look at eco-friendly house building material and house features which can positively impact the environment. Upon completion of the investigation of their learnings, students will design and construct a diorama of a sustainable home.   They will be required to justify their design decisions and list of their building materials and house features – e.g. water tank, solar panels, compost, eco-friendly building materials. Students must create their diorama using recycled house hold items (cereal box, toilet rolls, aluminium cans) and explain why they have chosen to use or implement particular house features or building materials and present their findings and design to their peers.

.

The complementary content description allows students to align what they have learnt during the Knowledge and Understanding phase and transfer it to an engaging and hands-on diorama where they can showcase their ideas and understandings in a unique and authentic way.
